Sicily Azienda Agricola Riofavara
We got terribly lost looking for Riofavara (in fact, we got
terribly lost looking for anywhere: Sicilians seem to eschew road
signs, and estates are coy to the point of invisibility!), but it
was worth finding. Yet again, another roadside rendezvous, this
time in a petrol station. And then, what a tasting we had. The
wines were so good that we feared the worst on prices, so you can
imagine how relieved we were to discover the truth. Unbelievable
value for money. Massimo Padova and his wife Margherita create
silky, sensuous Nero d'Avola (the estate lies within that grape's
heartland, Val di Noto), a stunning Insolia/Grecchetto/Chardonnay
blend, Marzaiolo, and a sensational Moscato di Noto, Notissimo,
which will have you weeping for joy! Everything is hand-picked, and
the red wines are unfiltered. Marzaiolo is aged in stainless steel
and bottle for 6 months; San Basilio in French oak botte for four
months; Eloro in barriques for six months; and Sciavé in barriques
for 18 months.
