The sixteenth century frescos on the wall are not in the least incongruous, seen beside the gleaming stainless steel tanks in Fratelli Berlucchi's cellars. On the contrary, that picture sums up perfectly the blend of tradition and modernity that epitomises the family's passionate approach to their inheritance. Tilli Rizzo and her mother Pia, who is the current MD, make it clear to everyone who visits the enchantingly sited estate that their aim is to more than ever quality, not quantity.

One example of this attitude is that - with the exception of the Brut 25 - all their Franciacortas are the product of a single harvest. Fratelli Berlucchi aren't marketing a brand - they are making a vintage wine with bubbles. And very good they are, too.
